The spring Mallet Head Series concert will take place at Kenyon Hall, West Seattle on May 20th. This program features three musicians aligned into four different combinations: Tom Collier (vibes) and Marc Seales (piano) duo; Tom Collier and Dan Dean (electric bass) duo; Marc Seales and Dan Dean duo; Collier, Seales , and Dean trio. The three duos and one trio will perform jazz standards, unique arrangements of popular songs, and original compositions. Don't forget the $1 popcorn and root beer floats not to mention intermission door prizes and pipe organ presentation by Lou Magor.

The Mallet Head program at Kenyon Hall begins at 7:30 and includes an intermission featuring $1 root beer floats (!) and a brief performance by Lou Magor on the world famous 1929 Mighty Wurlitzer organ. The tradition of an organ interlude in jazz goes back to the famous Fate Marable who was an early employer of great New Orleans jazz musicians including Louis Armstrong.

After many years of performances at Meany Studio Theater on the University of Washington campus, the Mallet Head Series is moving to a new location. On Friday, October 21st, Kenyon Hall in West Seattle will host the next Mallet Head concert featuring vibraphonist Tom Collier and pianist Marc Seales. The duo will be playing unique arrangements of jazz standards, popular songs, and maybe an original composition or two. Marc, a longtime faculty member of the UW's School of Music Jazz Studies program, is one of the most prominent jazz pianists on the west coast. In addition to leading his own groups, he has performed with many important jazz artists including Joe Henderson, Art Pepper, Benny Carter, Don Lanphere, and Bobby Hutcherson.

Tom, who recently retired as Professor Emeritus from the UW, recently released Across The Bridge, an album inspired by various iconic locations around West Seattle where he grew up. The recording has been placed on the 2017 first round GRAMMY ballot in three categories: Best Instrumental Jazz Album, Best Improvised Jazz Solo, and Best Produced Jazz Album.

Tom Collier & Dan Dean join drummer John Bishop in the penultimate Mallet Head concert of Collier's University of Washington career on February 12, 2016 in Meany Studio Theater on the University of Washington campus. As a drummer, educator, record label owner (Origin Records), graphic designer, publisher, and festival presenter, John Bishop has been one of the primary voices in Northwest Jazz for over 30 years. As a drummer, he has performed in concerts and clubs with Bobby McFerrin, Lee Konitz, Slide Hampton, Benny Golson, George Cables, Kenny Werner, Bobby Hutcherson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Julian Priester, Herb Ellis, Buddy DeFranco, Pete Christlieb, Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, Kenny Rankin, and countless others. He’s appeared on more than 100 albums, and was inducted into the Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame in 2008.

Collier & Dean celebrated 50 years of playing music together in 2015 and are not finished by any means. Dean just finished producing Collier's latest CD, Across The Bridge - on Bishop's record label, Origin. Dean also played bass and rhythm guitar on the album. Collier is retiring from the University in June where he has been Professor of Percussion since 1980. The final Mallet Head concert will be presented on May 27th and will feature Dan Dean and guest artists to be announced.

The first Mallet Head concert of the University of Washington School of Music's 2015-16 concert series will feature vibraphonist Tom Collier and pianist Dawn Clement, a nationally recognized rising star in jazz. The performance will be held on the UW campus in Meany Studio Theater on Friday, October 30, 7:30pm.

Dawn has played with some of the brightest luminaries in contemporary jazz and has appeared at prestigious venues across the globe. Her accolades have been numerous. Highlights include invitations to play at the Mary Lou Williams Piano Competition at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC and the International Martial Solal Jazz Piano Competition in Paris. In addition to her busy international performing schedule she is an adjunct instructor at Cornish College of the Arts, where she also received her Bachelors of Music.

The concert will include several of Dawn's compositions as well as arrangements of a mixture of jazz standards and popular songs. Tom and Dawn will be joined by electric bassist Dan Dean and drummer Steve Korn. Tickets are $20 ($10 for seniors and students) and can be purchased at the door or the Arts UW Ticket Office.

Tom Collier and Dan Dean will celebrate 50 years of playing music together - their first gig was in 1965 playing These Boots Are Made For Walking and Tijuana Taxi on a talent show at Fort Lewis, WA. That same year, Tom and Dan started recording pop songs, jazz standards and original compositions on a 2-track tape recorder that was set up to allow overdubbing. Some of the first songs they recorded were their own arrangements of music from the Beatles' Rubber Soul album. The duo, accompanied by UW Artist In-Residence drummer Ted Poor, will include a song from those early recording sessions of Beatles songs, Norwegian Wood. The duo will also revisit some of their favorite pop tunes, jazz standards and original compositions from the past 50 years - updated especially for this concert.
